‘A lot at stake:’ Bay Ferries deal challenged by opposition leaders

Nova Scotia opposition leaders threw more criticism at the provincial government’s relationship with Bay Ferries, after the transportation minister didn’t have answers to their questions. PC Leader Tim Houston and NDP Leader Gary Burrill are critical of the Liberal government’s decision to subsidize the company’s terminal renovations in Bar Harbor, Maine.

Dartmouth twins headed to Canada Games with Nova Scotia Wheelchair Basketball

Dartmouth twins Julia and Kayla MacKinnon don’t play many sports together, especially with Kayla’s cerebral palsy. Yet, the two 15-year-olds are about to play competitive wheelchair basketball for Team Nova Scotia at the 2019 Canada Games this February. This is because wheelchair basketball allows both able-bodied and physically impaired players to play together on the court.

Financial records dissected at ex-Mountie’s drug trial

On Febraury 11, The Crown presented stacks of financial documents to back up its claim that former RCMP officer Craig Robert Burnett stole cocaine from an evidence locker and sold it in collaboration with a close friend. RCMP Const. Ryan Berry, who was part of the investigation Operation Handshake, presented and discussed the records they had collected as evidence.

(Video) How Halifax’s designated smoking areas are selected

The Halifax Regional Municipality brought in new smoking rules on Oct. 15, 2018. Smokers are required to stay in designated smoking areas (DSA) on municipal property, such as city streets. When requests are made for new DSAs, the municipality evaluates potential areas on a case-by-case basis. Here are some of the factors they consider when they do take a look.

IWK officials questioned on financial control policies

IWK Health Centre executives say they are addressing internal problems following a financial scandal involving two former executives. Board chair Karen Hutt and new CEO Krista Jangaard were questioned by MLAs who wanted answers on what the pair was doing to fix what the Nova Scotia auditor general called a “poor IWK board performance.”
